15 Remote Jobs for Stay-at-Home Moms & Dads | Flexible Work-from-Home Jobs

by | Last updated Feb 16, 2023

Finding a remote job for a stay-at-home mom or dad is not always easy. After all, the job needs to be online and has to be completely flexible in terms of working hours. On top of that, you may not always be able to do a high volume of working hours. Some weeks it’s more, others it’s less. So the more flexible the job, the better.

To help you with the job search, I’ve collected 15 of the best remote jobs for stay-at-home moms and dads.

Most Flexible Remote Jobs for Stay-at-Home Moms & Dads

All of the following jobs can be done from home or while traveling as a digital nomad. It doesn’t matter where you are. As long as you have a reliable internet connection, you can make money with these online jobs.

1. Virtual Assistance

As a virtual assistant, you work for a company, a business owner, or an entrepreneur and help them manage their daily tasks. That could involve things like:

  • Simple admin work,
  • Booking flights,
  • Organizing meetings,
  • Managing the weekly schedule,
  • Replying to emails, or
  • Doing research.

Being a virtual assistant doesn’t require a degree in most cases. Most of the tasks can also easily be done without any previous experience. In any case, you should be a very organized and structured person, be proactive, and be a problem solver.

Your income can range depending on your experience and your tasks. Many beginners can start with $12 to $18 per hour.

If you can do more specific tasks, for instance, assist in social media work, you can also charge up to $40 an hour.

Your best chances to find work are either freelance platforms, such as Fiverr or Upwork, or specialized websites like Fancyhands, VickyVirtual, Belay, or Boldly.

2. Content Writer

As a freelance writer, you usually have a very flexible schedule. Here you get a topic and sometimes a rough structure of a text, too, and can then start writing whenever it works best for you. As long as you hand it in by the given deadline, you are flexible to work when and from where you want.

For most content writing positions you don’t need to have a degree. While experience surely helps you get jobs, there are also many jobs out there that you can do as a beginner. And of course, writing is a skill. The more you practice, the better you get.

There are different ways to get paid. Some writers charge per word they write. Rates can vary between $0.02 – $1 per word.

Other writers charge per hour. Here, you can expect up to $250 per hour if you are experienced and specialize in a certain niche, for instance, technical or medical writing.

You can find freelance writing jobs on websites such as Fiverr or Upwork or head over to platforms like Blogging Pro, Hire Writers, Pro Blogger, or Textbroker.

3. Data Entry Specialist

As a data entry specialist, you work on big spreadsheets and databases. Here you check the given data for accuracy and completeness. You may also be responsible for collecting data or maintaining and organizing the databases.

Of course, you need to be very detail-oriented and structured to be able to do the job correctly. A certain degree or experience is normally not required.

To find data entry jobs, check with companies such as Clickworker, SigTrack, or Amazon Mechanical Turk. Your hourly rates can be between $9 – $16 per hour and your working hours are usually very flexible.

4. Proofreader/Editor

This is another job that is perfect for detail-oriented people. As a proofreader, you get different kinds of texts that you have to check for accuracy. That also means that your spelling and grammar skills need to be impeccable to spot mistakes.

This job is often combined with editorial tasks. Here you also check if the structure of the text is consistent, if any information is missing, or if the tone of the text is in line with other texts of the company or website.

While a degree in languages or journalism or previous experience is not necessarily required, it couldn’t harm either. Expect payments of around $15 – $25 per hour.

Again, you can also find work on freelance platforms like Fiverr or Upwork.

If you want to learn more about how to find jobs on these platforms as a beginner, make sure to check out my guides:

5. Transcriptionist

And we continue our list of remote jobs for stay-at-home moms and dads with another job that requires orientation to detail. As a transcriptionist, you get audio or video files that you need to listen to and transcribe what you hear. Since the audio quality is not always the best, your sense of hearing must be good.

You also need to be able to type fast. Because the more often you have to press pause and repeat the audio, the longer it takes for you to complete the job.

For general transcription jobs, you don’t need a degree or experience. But if you want to go for specialized positions, like medical transcriptions, you should know the common terms and phrases.

For jobs, check out companies like Babbletype, Cactus Global, or Daily Transcription. As a beginner, your payments can be between $6 – $11 per hour. More experienced transcriptionists can make up to $20 per hour.

6. Online Teacher or Tutor

If you can set a schedule where you can work in peace for an hour or two without your kids interrupting you, you could also consider working as an online teacher or tutor. Here you teach lessons to your students via video call so you have to make sure that you are available during the agreed hours.

You could, for instance, teach English, or any other language you may speak, to foreigners. Or if you are good in a certain school subject, like chemistry or math, you could tutor high school students. Or maybe art lessons or a musical instrument that you can play. There are many options for potential teaching sessions.

Check with platforms such as Cambly, VIPKid, Study.com, or Tutor ABC for potential jobs. You can often set your own hourly rates, but the average is around $20 – $40 per hour.

7. Social Media Manager

If you know your way around social media, you could also make money in that area. Basic tasks are, for instance:

  • Researching new content ideas,
  • Scheduling posts,
  • Replying to comments and messages, or
  • Liking and commenting on other people’s posts.

If you have a background in social media, you could also do advanced tasks, like developing a new strategy.

On top of that, you could specialize in a certain social media channel, for instance, Pinterest. Here you are, for instance, responsible for creating engaging pins and pinning content to group boards.

While a degree in marketing could surely help, it is by no means a requirement. You can expect rates of around $12 to $45 per hour and can find jobs on websites such as Social Tribe, ICUC Social, or Mediabistro.

8. Customer Service Agent

Customer service is one of the most popular work-from-home jobs for moms and dads out there. Here you are responsible for all kinds of customer requests, like:

  • Scheduling appointments,
  • Answering questions regarding the services, or
  • Assisting in product-related problems.

While many customer service positions are based on phone calls, this might not be the best option if you have noisy kids at home. In that case, you could also opt for jobs that involve email support or live chat support.

Your payment as a beginner could be somewhere between $14 – $25 per hour. For currently available positions, check with companies like LiveOps, The Chat Shop, Transcom, or Concentrix.

9. Bookkeeper

This is another great job for everyone who is very organized and good with numbers and a great remote job for stay-at-home moms and dads. Despite what many people think, you don’t necessarily need a degree to work as a virtual bookkeeper.

Here you help small companies or sole proprietors keep up with their accounting tasks. For example, you:

  • Create and send out invoices,
  • Scan or enter bills in a payment system, or
  • File expenses.

According to ZipRecruiter, you can make an average of $38,000 per year as a virtual bookkeeper. But if you check out freelance platforms such as Upwork, you can find many freelancers who successfully charge up to $50 per hour.

10. Pinterest Manager

If you like social media or graphic design, you could also specialize in one social media channel. Let’s take Pinterest as an example.

As a Pinterest manager, your tasks include creating beautiful and engaging pins, pinning them to the right boards, and making sure your client’s Pinterest profile stays active and gets lots of traffic.

You don’t need a degree for this job and can use free tools such as Canva to create your designs.

Again, you can find clients on freelancer platforms like Fiverr, Freelancer, or Upwork, and can set your own rates, which could either be hourly or per work package.

For example, for a pack of 50 pins, you could charge up to $200. If you set up a new Pinterest profile with boards and pin and repin regularly for 4 weeks, you could charge $120.

11. Online Interior Decorator

Do you love decorating or designing houses? Then you should consider working as a remote interior decorator. Clients send you photos of their rooms or houses and tell you what they like and what they don’t like.

Your job is to take these ideas and suggest improvements or an entirely new design for the room. You could use software such as SketchUp, Floorplanner, SmartDraw, or HomeByMe to visualize your ideas.

The average income is around $24 per hour. But you could also charge per project. As an example, you could make between $150 and $400 per room for accessorizing. If you want to do an entirely new design including decoration, you could charge up to $750 per room.

Again, you can find clients on freelance platforms like Fiverr or Upwork.

12. Create and Sell Digital Products

If you want total flexibility, you should consider becoming your own boss and starting an online business. A fantastic business idea you can start with absolutely zero investment is creating and selling digital products.

  • For instance, you could create all kinds of templates, like resume templates, wedding invitations, or menu cards.
  • Or you could write ebooks, either non-fiction or novels.
  • Another idea would be online courses in your field of expertise.
  • Or maybe you are good with Photoshop? You could create presets that people could use as a template for their pictures.

There are many ideas for digital products.

Once they are created, you can sell them on different platforms, like Etsy, Teachable, Udemy, Canva, or you create your own online shop.  Depending on how much you charge per product and how many you can sell, your income opportunities here are literally endless.

13. Microtasks

If you are looking for ways to make only a few extra dollars every week, you could consider microtasks. Download free apps such as Swagbucks, InboxDollars, Ibotta, or Rakuten and do one of the many tasks offered to collect points.

Tasks are for example:

  • Completing online surveys,
  • Listening to music,
  • Playing online games, or
  • Using cashback codes when shopping.

Your points can later get redeemed for money via PayPal, bank transfer, or gift cards to popular retailers such as Amazon, Target, or Walmart. Active users often make between $100 – $300 per month using these apps.

14. Start a Blog

Starting a blog is not as technical as it sounds. Today, many easy-to-use drag-and-drop systems allow everyone to create a beautiful website in only a few steps. So you don’t need to have any coding or programming skills.

You can write about anything that you are passionate about or an expert in. That could be, for instance, motherhood, fashion, health, travel, personal finance, or food.

Once you have a decent number of readers, you can monetize your blog by:

  • Placing ads,
  • Finding sponsors, or
  • Promoting products and earning a sales commission (= affiliate marketing).

Your income opportunities are endless. Everything from a few dollars to six figures a month is possible.

15. Start a YouTube Channel

A YouTube channel is surely not a good way to make money fast but it can be a great way to generate mostly passive income in the long run. Here you decide on a niche, for example, money hacks, DIY ideas, gardening, cooking, beauty, or spirituality, and regularly create videos on your topic.

Once you have 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours, you get paid by YouTube for placing ads before, during, or after your videos.

You can also make money with your channel before that by using affiliate partnerships. Here you promote products or services that you like and if someone buys the product using the link or discount code you provide, you get a commission.

Your income opportunities vary a lot and can be a couple of dollars every month to a monthly six-figure income.
