9 Work from Home Healthcare Jobs – Remote Jobs for Medical Professionals

by | Last updated Aug 22, 2021

Today there is hardly an industry where remote jobs are not available. Believe it or not, there are also many work from home healthcare jobs out there. And the beauty of these remote jobs for medical professionals is that they are diverse and offer great payments.

Keep reading as we take a good look at some of these jobs, the minimum qualification they require, and the annual salary.

Work from Home Healthcare Jobs for Medical Professionals

Below are some of the best work from home healthcare jobs you can find. Before you read further, keep in mind that different medical jobs will require different qualifications. Let’s dive in now.

1. Pharmacists

The days of being a behind-the-counter pharmacist are fast passing us by. This is not to say we no longer need pharmacists to be physically present in the pharmacy. It just means there are many work from home pharmacist jobs you can do.

Many reputable health insurance companies employ remote pharmacists to execute several tasks, including writing, consulting, and reviewing new drugs. If you are a clinical research expert, you can also apply to CROs (Clinical Research Organizations). Some of the jobs in this category include pharmacovigilance, medical monitor, and research associate jobs.

All these jobs can be done remotely, and all you will need is a laptop and a phone with an internet connection. According to ziprecruiter.com, you can earn between $40,000 to $120,000 per year working remote pharmacy jobs.

To be qualified to work as a pharmacist, you will need a minimum qualification of a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm. D). This degree will also qualify a pharmacist to take the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX).

2. Medical Billing and Coding

There is a growing demand for healthcare professionals who can process essential data. This is why medical billing and coding has become one of the most lucrative remote jobs for medical pros. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics expects a growth of about 15% in medical billing and coding in the next four years. This means an estimated 30,000 new jobs created in the field.

There is good money to be made from work from home medical billing and coding. As of 2016, a starter could earn around $18 per hour ($38,000 per year). According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics 2020 report, medical billers and coders earn around $20 per hour.

The figures above are minimum averages. Some coders earn higher, depending on their state of residence. Those in the high end make as much as $63,000 per annum.

You may wonder why the demand for experts in this field is on the rise. You can hold the aging population, a higher need for health data, and the digitization of health records responsible. As a coder, what you have to do is go through a doctor’s report from a previously conducted procedure or health check and translate it into a code.

On the other hand, the biller has the duty of creating legal bills for the healthcare provider’s office. The biller is also tasked with sending these bills out to the insurance company or the payer. One person can execute both tasks. You will need a computer and a phone to work. You will also need a minimum requirement of a diploma or associate degree to work in this field.

3. Nurse Educator

This is another healthcare job that can be done from home. However, you will need a minimum qualification of a BSN (Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing) to be employable in this field. If you would like to further your education, then you can take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN).

The duties of a nurse educator are to teach nursing curriculums to nursing students in universities and colleges. They can be physically present on campuses to teach these curriculums, or they can do so remotely. This is a very delicate job, so a nurse educator must possess good communication skills and sound leadership qualities. Thorough knowledge of nursing is also a must-have to be employed in this field.

On average, a nurse educator earns about $73,000 annually. This figure may vary depending on the educator’s experience and expertise. The reason for such a high salary is simple; there is a high demand for nurse educators and a low supply of them.

The United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics estimates a 19% growth in nursing educators’ employment within the next five years. With such high expectations, work from home nursing jobs will become a more popular option for those holding nursing qualifications.

4. Medical Transcriptionists

This is a pretty straightforward job in the medical field, which you can do right from the comfort of your home or in other remote places. It requires transcribing an audio or video medical report by a doctor, nurse, or any other medical practitioner into written format.

Audio or video reports could be simple voice files during lectures or videos of medical procedures. The person in charge of transcribing the files will have to pay close attention to the audio to avoid mistakes. All interpretations must be accurate.

A medical transcriptionist can easily work from home using a few tools. These include a computer, phone, writing software, and an audio player for listening. The transcriptionist can receive the audio via phone call. It can also be sent via email or downloaded using certain mobile apps. This job is perfect for retired nurses, stay-at-home moms, digital nomads, or pretty much anyone wanting to work remotely. If you are fast on the keyboard, then you can give this job a shot.

The pay is not bad either. You can earn about $16 an hour working as a medical transcriptionist. This depends on the state or organization you are working for. The pay could go higher.

To begin working as a medical transcriptionist, you will need a minimum qualification of a high school diploma or GED.

5. Medical Call Centers

With so many remote job opportunities being created every day around the world, you should not be surprised if I told you that you could work as a medical call center agent right from the comfort of your home. Medical call centers have become very popular, and it allows individuals to make some money by merely representing a clinic or medical center.

Many clinics and medical centers outsource their customer care duties to call center companies, who then pass on the job to qualified individuals in exchange for an agreed daily, weekly, or monthly fee. The medical call center agent’s job is to answer simple patient questions and attend to their necessary inquiries.

There are a few things you will need to execute this job. These include a computer, a good internet connection, a phone, a quiet area to set up your work station, and of course, some training and experience in the field of customer care services.

Anyone can do this job because it is simple and straightforward. Your job is not to prescribe drugs or give medical advice. Instead, it would be to receive calls and answer simple questions or book appointments. If you are friendly, have excellent communication skills, good listening ability, patience, ability to multi-task, and an understanding of necessary computer software, then you can easily do this job.

The pay is decent. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, you can earn up to $34,000 per year working this job.

6. Health Insurance Agents

A health insurance agent’s role is another career in the medical field that you can do remotely. The job requires you to look for the best health insurance deals for your clients and help them have a clear understanding of various health plans.

Their ability to plan recommendations based on a client’s unique situation is one of the significant factors that separate them from exchange navigators. Even after helping your client purchase the right health plan, you will still need to assist them in the areas of billing, medical claims, utilization, and appeals.

Not everyone can do this job; you will need to be qualified first. The state department of insurance must license every health insurance agent. You will also need to be certified by the government-run exchange. It does not end there. Health insurance agents are mandated to have training in each of the insurance packages they sell. They are to receive this training from the insurance companies they represent or the state regulatory agency.

Their education is a continuous process, and it is crucial if they want to hold on to their certifications and licenses. The insurance company you represent will be responsible for paying your wages. The good thing is, you do not have to be in their office to carry out your duties. You can simply set up a home office and work remotely.

All you need is a phone for taking and making calls, a laptop for sending and receiving emails/chats, software for drafts, and a good internet connection. Even if you have to leave your home for some reason, you can take your laptop with you and work while you are on the road or in another state.

The salary range is quite big here: A health insurance agent can earn between $35,000 to $150,000 per year. This is according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics 2019 estimates.

7. Telemedicine

Telemedicine is among the most popular remote jobs a medical practitioner can do. It can be practiced in many ways. You may decide to render your services as a full or part-time telemedicine physician.

Giving patients professional medical counseling over the phone is one of the significant parts of telemedicine. You can also live-chat or video-chat with your patients from your home. Instead of making the clinic trip, the patient can receive consultation services using a mobile phone or laptop. The doctor will also render his/her services via the same means.

Telemedicine is broad by itself. However, some of the jobs you can explore are teledermatology, telepsychiatry, and remote neurological monitoring. To become a qualified doctor, you will need between 5 to 6 years to obtain your medical degree. If you live in the USA, the degree must be acknowledged by the General Medical Council (GMC).

You can earn up to $250,000 per year from telemedicine. So this is definitely one of the highest-paying remote jobs out there.

8. Utilization Review

If you are a physician who would like to start working from home, then you should consider chart review jobs. This medical niche has grown very popular, and it pays a decent amount of money. It is also very flexible and will allow you to dedicate time to other endeavors.

It is quite similar to telemedicine and other work-from-home medical gigs, being that you can take it up as a full or part-time job.  The job of a utilization review physician is to review outpatient services and hospitalizations. Their duties also include peer-to-peer calls with hospitals, quality initiatives, and medical policy development.

If you are a physician who enjoys making complex medical decisions but aren’t interested in physically working in the clinic, then this job is for you. To be qualified for this job, you need board certification and a valid medical license.

You can expect to make between $62,000 to $96,000 annually from this job according to ZipRecruiter.

9. Physician Advisor

You will find physician advisors in every brick and mortar hospital you visit. However, it is now a job you can do from your workspace at home. All you have to do is search for employers who need your expertise. If you enjoy tutoring other clinicians and still want to remain hands-on with patient treatment, but would rather avoid the clinic, then this remote job is for you.

According to salary.com, a physician advisor working in the U.S earns between $101,000 to $160,000 annually.

You will need to be a licensed physician to do this job.

  2. Yes, they are a thing, but just not a realistic thing. Most coding and even utilization review jobs require you to be able to be physically present in offices for trainings and meetings (some as often as once a week for 1-2 hours). They also require a secure LAN network, an encypted computer that you get from your institue, office router, or be connected to certain type of internet (no wireless networks). Its all about sensitive data security.

Let’s not forget years and years of experience. I have eight year of working experience in healthcare field, but am not able to land one single remote nursing job that can be done while traveling. That’s despite one year of job hunt along with thousand of applications.
